Advanced Tattoo Removal Technology, Built Around the Right Wavelength

Professional laser tattoo removal relies on two critical factors: wavelength and pulse duration.

The wavelength determines which colours of tattoo pigment can be effectively targeted, while the pulse duration determines how quickly the laser energy is delivered into that pigment.

Both Q-Switched nanosecond lasers and Picosecond lasers are designed to deliver extremely short, high-powered pulses that fragment tattoo pigment, allowing the body’s natural processes to gradually clear the treated particles.

The key difference is how short those pulses are.

Q-Switched Nd:YAG

Proven Technology. Powerful Performance.

Q-Switched lasers have been a cornerstone of professional tattoo removal for decades.

A Q-Switched Nd delivers energy in extremely short nanosecond pulses, billionths of a second. This creates a powerful photoacoustic and photothermal effect within the targeted tattoo pigment, causing pigment particles to fragment while limiting unnecessary damage to surrounding tissue.

One of the major advantages of Nd technology is access to two highly important tattoo-removal wavelengths:

1064nm: Black & Dark Pigments
The primary Nd wavelength and one of the most important wavelengths in tattoo removal. It is highly effective for black and dark tattoo inks and penetrates more deeply into the skin. Its relatively low absorption by epidermal melanin also makes 1064nm particularly valuable when treating darker skin types.
532nm: Red & Warm Pigments
Created by frequency-doubling the 1064nm Nd wavelength. It is strongly absorbed by red and other warm-coloured tattoo pigments and is commonly used for red, orange and some yellow inks.
585nm: Selected Blue Pigments
Provides an additional option for targeting some blue tattoo inks.
650nm: Selected Green Pigments
Provides an additional wavelength for targeting green and blue-green tattoo pigments.

Additional wavelength handpieces can further expand the colour range of some Q-Switched systems.

Benefits of Q-Switched Technology

  • Established and proven tattoo-removal technology
  • Excellent performance on black and dark inks with 1064nm
  • 532nm provides effective treatment of red and warm-coloured inks
  • High peak power and strong pigment fragmentation
  • 1064nm offers advantages when treating darker skin types
  • Additional wavelength options can expand treatment of multicoloured tattoos
  • Professional tattoo-removal capability without the significantly higher investment associated with many picosecond platforms

Picosecond Laser

Ultra-Short Pulses. Advanced Pigment Fragmentation.

Picosecond technology takes short-pulse tattoo removal a step further by delivering laser energy in picoseconds, trillionths of a second.

Because the energy is delivered over a significantly shorter period than a traditional nanosecond Q-Switch, picosecond lasers generate a particularly strong photoacoustic effect within tattoo pigment.

This can fragment pigment into very small particles and may provide advantages when treating stubborn, resistant or previously treated tattoos, as well as certain difficult tattoo colours.

Importantly, Pico is not a wavelength.

Picosecond systems still require the appropriate wavelength to target different colours. Depending on the laser platform, these may include:

1064nm
Primarily black and dark tattoo pigments.
532nm
Red, orange and other warm pigments.
755nm
Particularly useful for blue, green and some difficult colours.
Other specialised wavelengths
Available on selected picosecond platforms to further expand colour capability.

Benefits of Picosecond Technology

  • Extremely short picosecond pulse durations
  • Strong photoacoustic pigment fragmentation
  • Effective treatment of black tattoo pigment
  • Can offer advantages with resistant or previously treated tattoos
  • Certain picosecond wavelengths are particularly effective for challenging blue and green pigments
  • Advanced option for clinics specialising heavily in tattoo and pigment removal
